You need to find what the competition is charging before you can charge. You never want to overcharge and especially undercharge.

I’m in the process of simplifying my pricing structure, i tend to have more success charging my clients a fixed fee per project with a daily rate for ongoing work.

The main difference between set prices and quotes really stems from the caliber of the task at hand. It is possible and often expected by clients that you’ll have both set prices and some pricing that would require a quote.

For lawyers, you can find one that will be $x,xxx for a specific service like incorporation, while they will also have an hourly rate and give you an estimation for something that would need to go to trial.

In other words, the more remedial the task, the higher the need for a quote beyond a set price.

I agree that each project is very different (I don’t think that can be denied), so that is a big pitfall of set prices.

From experiance, I think knowing a clients budget is pretty vital to formulating a quote that is A) suitable for the clients needs b) Gives an indication to how serious the quote request is helping you point out time wasters and c) Helps to stop you over pricing services as many a web designer does thus generating more business
