I think we live in very different worlds.
In my world it's simply not possible to deliver just a PSD to the client.
The client always expect a website up and running as the final product!

The webdesigner have to know everything from psd design to xhtml/css/js coding to back end implementation.
The client always expect it all on a single package.

@noel: Its good to see people getting over the hurdle of building their own sites, if you do it once you'll be hooked as I'm sure you are :)

@dave: You'd be surprised how many sites don't need a backed, and if you aren't coding or requiring your coder to be standards compliant that is your issue! :)

Even if you do hire a backend developer to build your site in PHP, Rails or whatever, they typically will require that you have a HTML/CSS template for them to use.

While these solution will get you a functional website online, none of them will get you SEO, back end functioning, or standards compliance. Website programmers charge what they do for a reason, and a lot of companies are better off examining why that is.

Great tutorial and resources!

I love the idea of the end client actually learning how to code the site from a web comp, this does give the power to the end client and makes it less expensive in the long run to maintain the site. That is of course if they have the man power and free time to learn and perform these tasks...

I have recently gotten over the hump designing for web 2.0 using div tags and such and would love to share what I have found to be helpful...

I design the site in "illustrator" which makes it easier for adapting these design elements for print and signage work...

once the design is complete I rebuild the layout in fireworks cs3 and export as css/images...

which is awesome because its a visual way to layout the css that web 2.0 loves

...

hope my input helps
